Work in store? Retirement really is a recent phenomenon. It wasn’t until Social Security was established in the 1930’s, that people thought much about it. When my Grandfather retired in 1955 I’m sure it was novel for him; because for generations retirement was an unknown concept. Folks just worked until they weren’t able to any more. No one felt it odd since work was something you started when you were a boy on the farm and continued until your body gave out. It was a way of life and didn’t discriminate by age.
Think about it. God never intended that we live in a work-free environment. Work is a part of his plan ever since Adam left the Garden of Eden. Time has changed that.
God’s Word tells us: “So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran” (Genesis 12:4).
Perhaps it’s always a good idea to make our goals founded on the work that we can yet accomplish in life as opposed to the work we wish to avoid. Even in retirement our goal can be to work. Who knows what great calling God may yet have in store for you?
“Heavenly Father, sometimes the toil of this life seems more than we are able to bear and we look for easier ways, less toil and more pleasure. Forgive us when we despise what we do in order to do only what pleases us. In Jesus name, Amen!”
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34) www.thispassingday.com
