Unfinished walls? A man built an unfinished wall around his garden. He also amassed a pile of rocks much higher than the wall itself. When asked why he said. “The rocks in the wall were good criticisms, things I needed to work into my life. I took my time with each. The higher pile are those criticisms that were petty or untrue. I threw them away. I didn’t build them in.This wall is unfinished because within a lifetime there will always be a place for good criticism.”
Think about it. Our lives are built with stones people throw at us. We can build them in as lasting reminders of who we are and where we are going. Others we can throw away.
God’s Word tells us: “Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness; let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head.” (Psalm 141:5a).
We need to learn to discern between the criticism that is righteous and that which is not. That which is not, is cast away. That which is, is worthy to become part of the construction of our lives. We need to learn to discern between the two and not mix the meaningless with the meaningful. Today may be a good time to start building those unfinished wall in our lives.
“Heavenly Father, criticism is one of the hardest things to take in life. Forgive us when we bristle and complain each time a stone of criticism is tossed our way. Help us to discern which should be built into our lives and which not. In Jesus name. Amen!”
