Oaks or squashes? When future president James Garfield was principal of Hiram College in Ohio, a father asked him if the courses could be simplified so his son might go a shorter route. “Certainly,” Garfield replied. “It all depends. … When God wants to make an oak tree, He takes a 100 years. When He wants to make a squash he requires only two months.”
Think about it. Are we are raising a generation of squashes rather than oaks? The secret to success is successful people make a habit of doing things failures don’t like to do.
God’s Word tells us: “…be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.” (Proverbs 12:3).
God expects us to be tenacious, putting in our best effort. The Bible tells us to be like trees that “cannot be uprooted.” God wants you and I to be oaks, not squashes. It may take more time and effort, but the roots go deeper and the result lasts longer.
“Heavenly Father, help us to be willing to be change-makers. If we change ourselves, we can help change the world around us. So, help us to be strong and courageous, not turning from the right hand or left but keeping our focus on You.” In Jesus name we pray. Amen!”
