Growing stronger in critique? Years ago, my college roommate Mike and I shared a tough professor who terrified most students. Mike was one of the few willing to face his scrutiny, even when his answers were wrong. Unfazed, he'd smile through the rebuke. “It keeps me in shape,” he’d say. Mike understood that to defend against criticism, you had to first be open to it—an approach that made him resilient and unbothered.
Think about it. Mike learned that avoiding criticism might reduce short-term pain, but ultimately, facing it builds resilience and pays off in the long run.
God’s Word: “The Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in (Proverbs 3:12).”
Criticism can be discouraging, but it's important to face it rather than run away. Some criticism is helpful, while others are destructive. By standing firm, you'll learn to discern the difference and grow stronger. Don’t avoid criticism—deflect the harmful kind, and be open to constructive feedback. You never know when a well-placed critique might actually benefit you.
We pray: “Heavenly Father, help me face criticism with grace and courage. Teach me to discern between helpful and harmful words, and give me strength to stand firm. May I grow through correction, and trust that even tough feedback can lead to greater strength. In Jesus name. Amen.”
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day
