Waste of time?

(06.17.21– Not My Fault! – Ephesians 4:2)

My friend, may I ask you a question? When is blame a waste of time? Despite the fact that you find fault in others, and regardless of how much you blame them, will it change them, or will it change us?

There's an old adage that says, "People who are out to find fault seldom find anything else." Or, as my Grandpa used to say, "If you're always looking for someone or something to blame, try looking first in the mirror." There's a lot of truth in these old sayings, isn't there? If we continually fault-find, we will succeed in finding what we are looking for. Fault is pretty much everywhere. Just look around at all the sinners. How many do you see?

Blame is one of the greatest time-wasters you'll ever see. Can something this wasteful be of any good?

Here's a story: A preacher and an atheistic barber were once walking through the city slums. Said the barber to the preacher: "This is why I can't believe in a God of love. If God was as kind as you say, He would not permit all this poverty, disease, and squalor. He would not allow these poor bums to be addicted to dope and other character-destroying habits. No, I can't believe in a God who permits these things." The minister was silent until they met a man who was especially unkempt and filthy. His hair was hanging down his neck and he had a half-inch of stubble on his face, Said the minister: "You can't be a very good barber or you wouldn't permit a man like that to continue living in this neighborhood without a haircut and a shave." Indignantly the barber answered: "Why blame me for that man's condition? I can't help it that he's like that. He's never come into my shop, I could fix him up and make him look like a gentleman!" Giving the barber a penetrating look, the minister said: "Then don't blame God for allowing the people to continue in their evil ways, when He is constantly inviting them to come and be saved. The reason these people are slaves to sin and evil habits is that they refuse to know Jesus who died to save and deliver them." The barber saw the point. (Author unknown.)

All blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with another, and regardless of how much you blame him, it will not change you. The only thing blame does is to keep the focus off you when you are looking for external reasons to explain your unhappiness or frustration. You may succeed in making another feel guilty of something by blaming him, but you won't succeed in changing whatever it is about you that is making you unhappy.

We pray. Heavenly Father, we know by Your Spirit that blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with one another, and regardless of how much we blame them, it will not change us. The only thing blame does is to keep the focus off ourselves when we are sinfully looking for external reasons to explain our unhappiness or frustration. Grant us Your forgiveness in Jesus Christ. We may succeed in making others feel guilty of something by blaming them, but Lord we know we won't succeed in changing whatever it is about us that is making us unhappy in the first place. Help us by Your Spirit to offer forgiveness to our adversaries as opposed to blame. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
