UFOs? Life is full of “UFOs” (“U Failed Oops”), moments when hidden flaws surface, often when you're criticizing others for the same issues. Recently, I criticized my son Dan for not using his gifts, realizing I had done the same. Instead of encouraging him, I repeated a mistake from my past, highlighting my own shortcomings.
Think about it. Usually it’s a moment when you ought to be encouraging but criticism is easier, more satisfying. I had a U.F.O. moment the other day.
God’s Word: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Matthew 7:1-3).”
It’s easy to find fault in others, especially when excelling, because we recognize our own flaws in them. Quick critics should remember: "Many faults we see in others are those we expect because we have them ourselves." When a “UFO” (“U Failed Oops”) pops up, step back from criticism. Your encouragement might be the difference between someone's success or failure for failure for someone on the edge of excellence, just waiting for you to nudge them forward.
We pray: “Heavenly Father, grant us the wisdom to see our own flaws in the faults we find in others. Help us to replace criticism with encouragement, understanding that our words can shape destinies. Let our guidance be gentle, lifting others toward their potential and success. In Jesus name. Amen.”
