Tune-up?

My friend, may I ask you a question? How is your relationship with the Lord God Almighty? Is that relationship where you want it to be? Is it good enough or is it just Ok?

There are some things in life that require a higher degree of perfection than others. That's fortunate for me since I so often have that "it's good enough" attitude and if everything needed to be perfect, well, I would be in a bit of a soup. On the other hand, there were those times when perfection was called for; take for example timing an engine on a car. I know a lot of people don't do this anymore since computer tuning on the modern vehicles has made it less feasible for the typical garage mechanic, but it was something that I did on all of my cars for years. All you needed was a timing gun and a few wrenches. With the engine turning over you watched the gun's strobe as it lit up a number near the camshaft. You looked up the proper timing and then adjusted the camshaft accordingly. Being almost perfect was not good enough. You needed to be 100%, right-on or the engine would run rough. Now keeping all of the tires on my cars at the same, exact air pressure; that was a different matter. Close, for me, was good enough.

How about our relationship with God? Is good enough OK or?

Here's a thought: If 99.9% was good enough, 12 newborns will be given to the wrong parents daily. 114,500 mismatched pairs of shoes will be shipped/year and 18,322 pieces of mail will be mishandled per hour. 2,000,000 documents will be lost by the IRS this year and 2.5 million books will be shipped with the wrong covers. Even worse, two planes that land- ed at Chicago's O'Hare airport will be unsafe every day. 315 entries in Webster's Dictionary will be misspelled and 20,000 incorrect drug prescriptions will be written this year. 880,000 credit cards in circulation will turn out to have incorrect cardholder information on their magnetic strips as well as 103,260 income tax returns will be processed incorrectly during the year. 5.5 million cases of soft drinks produced will be flat and 291 pacemaker operations will be per- formed incorrectly. Oops! 3056 copies of tomorrow's Wall Street Journal will be missing one of the three sections. Finally, a typical day would be 24 hours long (give or take 86.4 seconds). Author unknown.

Is it time to tune up your relationship with God? What are his expectations? The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 13:11: "Aim for perfection" when it comes to your spiritual life. That doesn't imply anything less than 100%. Do you love Jesus? If you do you can be assured that his perfection will cover your imperfection. If you and I strive to love him as perfectly as we can, we're covered. But that means we need to give everything we've got, every possible effort we can muster to perfect that love. Tuning up our our love for Christ is a 100% proposition; just good enough won't do.

We pray. Heavenly Father, Your Word tells us to “Aim for perfection" when it comes to our spiritual life. Forgive us Lord when sometimes we feel that just being Ok is good enough when it comes to loving You. Your Word doesn't imply anything less than 100%. We want to love Jesus. We know that His perfection will cover our imperfection. When we strive to love Him as perfectly as we can, we know we are on the right track. But that means we need to give everything we've got, every possible effort we can muster to perfect that love. Tuning up our our love for Christ is a 100% proposition; just good enough won't do. Help us Lord to achieve that perfection in our love for Him Who loves us more. In Jesus name I pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello.
