Tomorrow?

(02.09.21—Tomorrow!--1 John 1:1-7

My friend, may I ask you a question? Are you prepared for tomorrow and that unknown plan God already has in mind for you? Is there anything you can do?

Being prepared. I must confess that I'm not always at the head of the class when it comes to being prepared. Preparation requires attributes like patience, diligence, insight and the ability to plan; traits I sometimes may be found lacking in. Some of God's creatures, on the other hand, are good examples for you and I when it comes to preparation. Field mice, for example, demonstrate this quality. Last fall prior to the heavy snowfall we received early in the winter, I had occasion to notice how the mice were already preparing for the several feet of snow that would soon cover their homes. As I raked leaves in the side yard, I began uncovering little thatched mouse tunnels under the leaves. The mice were building their little roofed highways in anticipation of the winter snows that would soon cover the yard. That's thinking ahead; some- thing I could use some help with from time to time.

Are you prepared for tomorrow and that unknown plan God already has in mind for you? Is there anything you can do?

Here's a story: The story has been told about a sailor who found himself shipwrecked on a South Sea Island. He was seized by the natives, hoisted to their shoulders, carried to their village, and seated on their throne. Little by little, he learned it was their custom each year to make some man king for a year. He liked this tradition a lot – until he began to wonder what had happened to all the former kings. Soon he discovered that when the king's one-year kingship ended, he was banished to a nearby barren island, where he would then starve to death. The sailor didn't like this idea at all, but he was smart, and decided to enjoy his year as king. Meanwhile, he put his carpenters to work making boats, his farmers to work transplanting fruit trees to the island of exile, and other farmers growing crops there, as well as masons building houses on the island. When his kingship was over, he went not to a barren island, but to one of abundance. (David A. Sargent)

How can we be prepared for tomorrow when God doesn't give us the same insights that sailor had? Let's face it; he could see into the future and God just doesn't give you and I that luxury; or, does He? What's on your calendar for tomorrow? Martin Luther used to say that he had only two days on his calendar: Today and "that day" – the day when we will meet the Lord in judgment. I guess that pretty much takes care of the "what if's" that really matter when you think about it. When you and I live with the thought that tomorrow might be our last one here, it puts a different light on living for tomorrow, doesn't it? Are you prepared for the possibility of heaven tomorrow? Like those field mice and their thatched tunnels, it makes sense to prepare; especially when you know that the weather up ahead is definitely turning heavenly.

We pray. Heavenly Father. Lord, what’s on our calendar for tomorrow? Should it be: Today and "that day" – the day when we will meet You in judgment? That limits the "what if's" that really matter when we think about it. Should we be scared, or should we be resolute and comforted? Lord, when we live with the thought that tomorrow might be our last one here, it puts a different light on living for tomorrow. Help us by Your Spirit to know this and accept it. It makes sense to prepare; especially when we know that the weather up ahead is definitely turning heavenly. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
