Spiritual bump?

Bump on the head? Years ago, I was trimming several of our beech trees with an extended pole saw. I've done it for years without giving it much thought. But on that day, I lopped off a branch about twenty-five feet up, and it landed right on my bald head. Stunned, I rubbed the bruise and wondered, “I wasn’t expecting it. How did that happen?”

Think about it. “How did that happen?” Well, usually it’s when we become so self-assured that one thing leads to another, and we become complacent so things just happen.

God’s Word: "So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall (1 Corinthians 10:12).”

As Christians, we need to stay constantly alert to life’s dangers, whether they come from temptation or simple carelessness on our part. Saying we’ll never fall is a warning sign that a stumble and fall may be near. Complacency can easily set in when things are going well, making us lose sight of God and rely on our routine instead of the guidance of prayer. That’s when we’re most vulnerable. Sometimes, it takes a “spiritual bump” on our heads to wake us up and remind us to stay vigilant concerning our faith at all times. There’s no need for careless spiritual bumps.

We pray. “Heavenly Father, keep us vigilant against life’s dangers and temptations. Help us recognize the warning signs when complacency sets in. May we never rely on routine instead of prayer, and when we stray, gently wake us up with Your guidance. Keep us focused on You. In Jesus name. Amen.”

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34)
