03.11.21—"Trust Me"–God--Psalm 143:8
My friend, may I ask you a question? Does God provides for us daily? Is all He asks is that we allow Him to get close to us with His awesome presence in order that He will be able to shower His blessings down upon us?
My friend, life’s a story, welcome to This Passing Day.
I’m M. Clifford Brunner
"Give us this day our daily bread." For many these words are a daily utterance, the central core of the Lord's Prayer. They're engraved on pictures hanging in our kitchens. Often they're a part of our evening prayer as we return thanks for one of those delicious meals we're often so privileged to eat. Yet, what do these simple seven words really mean? Well, they have as much to do with everything as with bread. That thought struck me the other day as I was clearing a path across the front lawn through the snow to get to a fallen tree. The tractor came very close to a small fir tree I planted several years ago. It's only a foot high and completely buried by the snow. Yet there it was –green, vibrant and alive, although buried. How much its survival depended on so many factors: drought, flood, wind, heat and cold, even a chance encounter with my tractor. When it comes to daily bread, its bread was all this and more.
Similarly, God provides for us daily; all He asks is we allow Him to get close to us with His awesome presence.
Here's a thought from Elizabeth Price: "We were sitting on the verandah for morning coffee recently and my husband reminisced on his ramblings through our garden the past summer. He said he was fixing a shed in the back of the garden and he ran across a bird’s nest in a peach tree we have. The young had already hatched and in time they filled the nest and their heads were over the side, keeping an eye on him. Because he passed by the nest often with building materials, the birds seemed to accept him as part of their environment so he stopped one morning for a closer look. He was at arm’s length and the mother bird sat on the nest to cover her young. At that time of the year the flies were abundant and easily caught so he caught one and offered it to the sitting bird. As his hand moved closer, she stretched out to take it and she followed by taking another and another. Daily, the mother bird trusted him not to harm her or her family." (Elizabeth Price)
Our trust in God overcomes our fear of Him just as the little bird’s trust overcame her fear of that garden handyman. When God asks us to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread," He's not just talking about our food. He's talking about our trust. Do we trust Him to not only provide our food, but our clothing, health, security, employment, even good fortune? Like that little evergreen tree, our daily survival is more than just what we put into our stomachs; it's everything that sustains, even brings pleasure. Do you fear God with trust and awe? That's the way He wants it. Are you afraid, however, that He won't provide for your every need? Look again. A close encounter with your God is at hand. His hand is reaching out to you right now. Stretch out and discover your daily bread today.
We pray. Heavenly Father. Our trust in You O God overcomes our fear of You just as the little bird’s trust overcame her fear of that garden handyman. Remind us Father that when You ask us to pray, You are not just talking about our food, but about our trust. Like that little evergreen tree, our daily survival is more than just what we put into our stomachs; it's everything that sustains, even brings pleasure. Bless us with a healthy fear of You so that we might know You in trust and awe. Help us to stretch out and discover our daily bread today. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen!
Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
