Open wide? Open mouth, insert foot. There are few times in life more embarrassing than when we say something we didn’t mean to say or let something slip that should not have been said. Once the cat is out of the bag, nonetheless, fixing the problem is often something that can only make the embarrassment worse.
Think about it. The problem is that we become so focused on vindicating ourselves that we totally overlook the fact that in our zeal we become the fool.
God’s Word tells us: “‘Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?” They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee’” (John 7:51).
When we are too quick to save face, our best defense can sometimes prove to be our worst offense. When we as Christians allow our pride to dictate our actions, we are often likely to end up less “defended” than when we began to defend ourselves. Sometimes the best way of keeping foot out of mouth is to make sure our mouths aren’t open wide enough to receive them.
God's Word. “Father, help me as I try to make my life a consistent and helpful witness to Jesus and his transforming power. Guide my words and give me wisdom for the proper timing to know when to talk with others who do not know Jesus about Him and what to say in truth and honesty from the start. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.”
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34)
