03.03.21—The Best Policy!--Proverbs 12:13
My friend, may I ask you a question? Tell the truth even when it hurts. The sting of an honest mistake or a truthful admission will go away quickly. The sting of twisting the truth and covering up our errors can last a lifetime. Really?
My friend, life’s a story, welcome to This Passing Day.
I’m M. Clifford Brunner
One thing about a lie, it has no legs. It requires other lies to support it. Tell one lie and you are forced to tell others to back it up. Being dishonest with our words is one of those things that feel right after a time. The first time we cover up or embellish the truth, we feel uneasy as our conscience begins to rebel. But, as time goes on and we carefully craft the lie, the pain somehow gets tolerable and a conscience so conditioned will eventually grow immune to the sting. That is when dishonesty is most dangerous. The pain is gone and there is nothing to stop us. We hurry down the path of untruth almost at ease. That is until . . .
The story is told of four high school boys who couldn’t resist the temptation to skip morning classes. Each had been smitten with a bad case of spring fever. After lunch they showed up at school and reported to the teacher that their car had a flat tire. Much to their relief, she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a quiz this morning, so take your seats and get out a pencil and paper.” Still smiling, she waited as they settled down and got ready for her questions. Then she said, “First question--which tire was flat?”(Source Unknown.)
The Bible tells us that “An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble (Proverbs 12:13).” The path of dishonesty never leads to safety. No matter how smooth it seems, no matter how quickly we seem to be able to walk down it, there always comes a time when, somewhere along the way, a large pit appears and swallows us up. The path of dishonesty is always under construction and you can be guaranteed that somewhere along the way the road ends and there is nowhere to turn. That is the nature of the lie. It’s deceptive for a time, even inviting. But, in the end, it always leads to a trap--a place where just one too many lies tips the balance and the whole thing collapses. There is only one sure defense. Tell the truth even when it hurts. The sting of an honest mistake or a truthful admission will go away quickly. The sting of twisting the truth and covering up our errors can last a lifetime.
We pray. Heavenly Father. The path of dishonesty is always under construction and we’re guaranteed that somewhere along the way the road ends and there is nowhere to turn. That is the nature of the lie. Forgive us Father when we lie, when we are less than honest about anything. We know that You hate the lie more than anything else. In the end, lies always lead to a trap--a place where just one too many lies tips the balance and the whole thing collapses. Help us Lord to tell the truth even when it hurts. The sting of an honest mistake or a truthful admission will go away quickly. The sting of twisting the truth and covering up our errors can last a lifetime. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen!
Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
