Mom in the Kitchen?

(10.07.21– Works of the Heart –John 16:1-16)

My friend, may I ask you a question? Are we able to feel the Holy Spirit’s presence, giving us the comfort in knowing He is a comforting reflection of the Savior we long to see someday.?

Growing up, one thing that I always was pretty sure of was that Mom and Dad were always there. There was an exception, though. My father had won a trip as a premium through his job as an insurance salesman and that trip was designed for two, not eight. Like little puppy dogs we watched as they packed their suitcases and checked their tickets. They assured us that even though they would be hundreds of miles away, we should not be afraid. Grammy was coming to stay with us. I can still remember the feeling when she walked through the front door to greet us children. Our parents may be leaving, but Grammy was coming. That was a great comfort to us. Even though we longed to be with them, just having Grammy there, made it easier. In a sense, whenever we looked at her as she busied herself around the kitchen or with authority reminded us of bedtime, we saw a picture of Mom or Dad.

Jesus may not be physically with you today. But, like Grammy, the Holy Spirit is there in His stead. I can feel His presence now and it gives me comfort knowing that He is a comforting reflection of the Savior I long to see someday.

James Packer writes, "I remember walking to church one winter evening to preach on the words, 'He will glorify me' from John 16, seeing the building floodlit as I turned a corner, realizing that the floodlights are placed so that you don't see them; in fact, you're not supposed to see where the light is coming from; what you're meant to see is just the building on which the floodlights are trained. The intended effect is to make it visible when otherwise it would not be. This perfectly illustrated the Holy Spirit's new covenant role. He is the hidden floodlight shining on the Savior. It is as if the Spirit stands behind us, throwing light over our shoulder on to Jesus who stands facing us. The Spirit’s message to us is never, 'Look at me; listen to me; come to me; get to know me', but always, 'Look at him, and see his glory; listen to him and hear his word; go to him and have life; get to know him and taste his gift of joy and peace.' The Spirit is the celestial marriage broker, whose role it is to bring us and Christ together and ensure that we stay together." (James Packer)

No matter how alone we might feel in life, we're truly never alone. As I saw a reflection of my Mom working in the kitchen even though she was far away, so each of us sees a reflection in the person of the Holy Spirit of the One who loves us even more than our mother, Jesus Christ. We may be separated as Heaven is from Earth, but as long as the Comforter is opening the door of our heart, making himself busy in the kitchen of our lives, we need never feel lonely for our Savior. With the Comforter in our lives, it's like Dad is coming home and Mom in the kitchen. Supper is served!

We pray. Heavenly Father, as we often see reflections of those we love in our lives even though they may be far away, so each of us sees a reflection in the person of the Holy Spirit of the One who loves us even more than anyone in our lives, Jesus Christ. Thank you Father for the gift of the Spirit in our lives. We may be separated as Heaven is from Earth, but as long as the Holy Spirit is opening the doors of our hearts, making himself busy within, we need never feel lonely for our Savior. With the Comforter in our lives, it's like Dad is coming home and Mom in the kitchen. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
