Merciful death? Think about this: Our “spirit” is free in Christ through baptism and communion with the Word. What a blessed death. As Luther put it, “a dying full of grace and comfort.” Unburdened by sin, it guides us through life on paths of righteousness.
Think about it. The New Man, the spirit reborn in Christ, has a tremendous advantage over the “old man.” Whereas he drags through life, the new man soars though it.
God’s Word tells us: “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him” (Romans 6:8).
God sees us physically as His beloved, cursed to live degenerating physically. But the spirit grows within and the flesh deteriorates without. We can’t dwell in His presence continually like this. What a blessing it is that He has appointed each one of us to not only die spiritually but to also die physically. God is merciful. For the passage from this body to a glorified one on the Day of Judgement will be sweet as sweet can be. Then all shall finally be in order!
“Heavenly Father, we praise you Lord that you’ve given us rebirth in spirit through Christ. But these earthly bodies, filled with sorrow, sin and pain, must also die in order that we may dwell with You eternally in perfect peace!” In Jesus name we pray. Amen!
