A lonely virtue? Selflessness appears to be a lonely virtue in today’s society. A recent survey asked participants what they would do for ten million dollars. Shockingly, over 46% would abandon family, steal from friends, or even murder a stranger for personal gain. Most respondents identified as Christian, raising questions about the strength of their faith and the value of selflessness in a world driven by greed.
Think about it. What does God ask of us regarding our interests? Is there a limit to our willingness to sacrifice for others?
God’s Word: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:4-5).”
Does God want us to live selfishly or selflessly? The Bible teaches that He desires fairness, mercy, and humility (Micah 6:8). This means prioritizing others and showing kindness and justice to everyone, including strangers. Living selflessly may lead to loss, as Monti experienced. While society often glorifies winning, God values a humble loser over a proud winner. In His eyes, self-sacrifice always outweighs self-gain, reminding us that true fulfillment comes from serving others.
We pray. “Heavenly Father, guide us to live selflessly, embracing humility and kindness in every interaction. Teach us to prioritize others, finding fulfillment in serving those around us. May Your love shine through our actions, transforming our hearts and the lives we touch. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34)
