Half-shelters?

Half-shelters? Many pioneers heading west often arrived too late to build winter cabins. Instead, they constructed “half-shelters,” makeshift lean-tos using available materials, positioned against large oak or elm trees. A fire pit was placed outside the entrance. The goal was to survive the winter and build a proper home in the spring.

Think about it. A lot of trust went into building these half-shelters. They were flimsy and afforded little protection. Should the spring prove too wet or the winter snow got too deep, all bets on building a cabin might be off. It took courage to trust.

God’s Word: “Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge (Psalm 91:3-4).”

That little boy had to endure significant pain to develop the trust he would need for the tough times ahead. Life often presents challenges that make us grit our teeth, pray, and seek shelter under God’s wings. While the hurt may still be apparent, like the cold winds in those half-shelters, hope in God’s deliverance allows us to look beyond our pain. We anticipate a future refuge where we can find peace. Thank You, God, for our struggles; please bring relief soon.

We pray. “Heavenly Father, in our moments of pain and struggle, help us to trust in Your sheltering wings. Grant us the strength to endure hardships and the hope to see beyond them. Surround us with Your comfort, guiding us toward peace and healing in our hearts. We rely on You, Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.”

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.

Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34)
