Good grace? (11.09.21–Bad Choices--Good Endings!) –Genesis 16: 1-15)

My friend, may I ask you a question? There comes a time in everyone's life when the ability to make the right decision, apply good judgment, is critical. Some call it discernment?

Being able to judge situations and react accordingly is one of the most difficult things to do in life. It typically develops slowly as we mature into life, getting a good dose, of it in marriage and then an even deeper dose as we become parents. As we slip into the roles of advocate, mentor, teacher and disciplinarian, God continually opens the door to good judgment and invites us in. The experiences of life, including the bad ones, all serve to build within us the ability to discern and to make judgments based on choices, some bad and some good. Perhaps, above all other gifts we ought to be praying for, the gift of discernment ought always to be a priority bequest. There comes a time in everyone's life when the ability to make the right decision, apply good judgment, is critical. It's called discernment.

Chuck Swindoll writes: "I read this past week of a couple (let's call them Carl and Clara) whose 25-year marriage was a good one. They now had 3 grown children who loved them dearly. They were also blessed with sufficient financial security to allow them room to dream about a lakeside retirement home. They began looking. A widower we'll call Ben was selling his place. They liked it a lot and returned home to talk and plan. Months passed. Last fall, right out of the blue, Clara told Carl she wanted a divorce. He went numb. After all these years, why? She replied: "Actually, this was a recent decision." She had found another man; who Clara admitted was Ben, the owner of the lake house. Since they were now 'in love,' there was no turning back. Not even the kids, who hated the idea, could dissuade her. On the day she was to leave, Carl walked through the kitchen toward the garage. Realizing she would be gone when he returned, he hesitated, 'Well, Hon, I guess this is the last time.' His voice dissolved as he broke into sobs. She felt uneasy, hurriedly got her things together, and drove north to join Ben. Less than two weeks after she moved in with Ben, her new lover, he was seized with a heart attack. He lingered a few hours and then died." (Charles Swindoll, The Quest For Character, Multnomah, p. 42).

Although it may be rare that any of us would face such a critical time of good judgment in our lives as this, the fact remains that we do not know when God, in His wisdom, might present us with such. Failure to make the right decision, to discern which way to go, can often lead to critical mistakes; mistakes that can haunt even destroy. God works despite our mistakes, despite our poor judgments. If you have made mistakes in judgment in your life, mistakes that might still be haunting you, pray that God would forgive your poor judgment. Pray that He would give you the ability to wait on Him in all things. Pray that He would continue to work His will in your life. Make discernment a top priority today.

We pray. Heavenly Father, when we fail to make the right decision, to discern which way to go, it can often lead to critical mistakes; mistakes that can haunt even destroy. Lord please work with us despite our mistakes, despite our poor judgments. When we make mistakes in judgment in our life, mistakes that might still be haunting us from the past, pray forgive our poor judgment. Pray that You would give us the ability to wait on You in all things. Pray that You would continue to work Your will in our life. Help us always to make discernment a top priority every day. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
