Enjoy them all? After 55 years of work, sweet retirement has now knocked on my door. No more 5:00 AM alarms or worrying about the truck starting in the morning. Retirement was a goal worth striving for, offering the promise of working less and relaxing more. The present pales in comparison to the allure of slowing down. I wonder how my grandfather Leo felt about that?
Think about it. In a sense, living for retirement is living for tomorrow. If, however, tomorrow holds all the joy, what is the secret to being happy today? Is it simply the fact that we have our hope in tomorrow and that is our joy?
God’s Word: “How many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all (Ecclesiastes 11:8).”
We pray. “Heavenly Father, Dear Lord, help us find joy in every day by giving our best, just as my grandfather did. Teach us to cherish each moment, find satisfaction in our efforts, and embrace each sunrise with gratitude. May we live fully and enjoy all our days as Your Word instructs. Amen. In Jesus name. Amen.”
The secret to my grandfather Leo’s happiness for example wasn’t just retirement or fishing at sunrise, something he often did and I am sure that he treasured that. Grandpa Leo, even during the Great Depression, discovered joy by giving his all each day and ending with the satisfaction of doing his best in his job, raising his kids and worshipping his Lord. As the Bible says, “However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all” (Ecclesiastes 11:8).
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34)
