My friend, may I ask you a question? Do you want to simplify your life this year? Do you want to draw closer to God in worship and understanding?

Life is complicated. In this New Year doubtless you and I will be confronted more than once with a complicated situation that will take all the wisdom and creativity we have to get us through. Nevertheless, there is one thing we can do to smooth out the complicated, rough spots; we can make sure that as a rule we make simplification a priority. People are drawn to simplicity. Did you know that the most recognized document in American history isn't the Constitution or Declaration of Independence? More people recognize these five words above any other memorable phrases in American history: "Fourscore and seven years ago." The beginning lines of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address are memorable not because they are dripping with special meaning. The real reason is that Lincoln made it simple to remember. There are few multi-syllable words in this very short address. He wrote it on the back of an envelope and kept it very simple.

Here's a thought about simplicity from Bob Goodman, "Jet fighters take off land and are stored on deck." "How peculiar," I thought. "That doesn't make sense." Then I stopped to reconsider. My knowledge of such ships is limited, but I do know that they are called aircraft carriers for a reason! I revisited the sentence. "Jet fighters take off, land and are stored on deck." Aha! Now the sentence was clear. I had missed the comma! Some of us are missing many commas in our lives. We are scurrying around with a Blackberry (a handheld wireless e-mail, phone, browser, and organizer device), a Daytimer, and a calendar full to the brim. Our lives don't seem to make sense. We take precious little time to wonder about life's meaning and ponder God's purpose for our life. Then we ask why God has not spoken into our lives. His answers will become clear when we add some "commas" to our busy spaces. (Source unknown.)

Do you want to simplify your life this year? Do you want to draw closer to God in worship and understanding? Be resolved to root out the clutter in your life. If you find that you are never pausing but always moving at a frantic pace, you lack enough commas in life to give you the time to hear what God has to say. Simplify. Busyness isn't satisfying; it sucks the life out of a Christian. Instead of enjoying worship, prayer and devotion, life's frantic pace results in a rush to finish and not a pause to savor. This year make it your purpose to look at your monthly schedule and find something each month that you can eliminate. Make your life this New Year one that can be written on the back of an envelope and not on the scribbled pages of a calendar or the screen of your Blackberry. Insert some commas; maybe hit the "delete" button every now and then. Discover the joy that God has hidden in the quiet and the simple! Simplify!

We pray. Heavenly Father, life's frantic pace results in a rush to finish and not a pause to savor. Forgive us Lord. Help us this coming year to make it our purpose to look at our monthly schedule and find something each month that we can eliminate. Help us make our life this New Year one that can be written on the back of an envelope and not on the scribbled pages of a calendar or the screen of our computer. Help us to insert some commas; maybe hit the "delete" button every now and then. We want to discover the joy that You have hidden in the quiet and the simple! In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
