Bring it on?

(05.24.21 – Who’s In Control? -Mark 4:35-41)

My friend, may I ask you a question? When times are tough does it often seem that's when we question God the most? Why when things are going our way we seldom take the time to question God about the likelihood of the good continuing?

My friend, Life’s a story, welcome to This Passing Day.

I'm M. Clifford Brunner.

When times are tough it often seems that's when we question God the most. When things are going our way we seldom take the time to question God about the likelihood of the good continuing. We simply trust that the good times will continue and life will go on. However, when the good times come to an end, sometimes rather abruptly, then what? Is God really in control or has he decided to just let things happen at random and at chance? Although as Christians we want to believe otherwise, we find ourselves asking: "Does God really, personally intervene in our lives for our good or is that something we only hope for and not really believe?

Here's a story: During World War II, an American bomber took off from the island of Guam headed for Kokura, Japan, with a deadly cargo. Because clouds covered the target area, the captain decided they had better go for the secondary tar- get. Changing course, they found that the sky was clear and dropped their bombs. Some time later an officer received some startling information from military intelligence. Just one week before that bombing mission, in an effort to protect Kokura, an important Japanese industrial city, the Japanese had transferred one of their largest concentrations of captured American soldiers, seamen and airmen to the city. They intended to use the prisoners as a human shield. Had the weather been different, the captain of that bomber would have hit his primary target, Kokura, and many American lives would have been lost. (John Nelson Darby.)

God’s ways are quite often–behind the scenes; nevertheless He often moves those scenes He's behind. As Christians, you and I have to remember this, believe it, and let Him do his work. How often have you found yourself wondering if God is really affecting events in your life or if he's just watching you make one mistake after another, peeking out from behind a cloud, just waiting for that last fatal error that will send you running into his arms? There isn't a Christian among us who hasn't felt that way. The fact is, since God is changeless and His justice, love, mercy and grace are all equal, He would never let you drown in your own comedy of errors. He can't. He's a passenger in your boat, and mine, and his intent is to make it to the other side of this life with us in safe and careful tow. He's not concerned about the storms that are buffet- ing your life or mine yesterday, today or tomorrow. And, if he's not concerned, there's no reason that you or I should be either. Why? It's obvious that He has the power to not only manage; he has the power to overcome–perfectly. With Jesus in our boat, we really do have precious little to worry about. Life? Bring it on!

We pray. Heavenly Father, You are changeless and Your justice, love, mercy and grace are all equal. We praise You that You would never let us drown in your own comedy of errors, because You are a passenger in the boat that is carrying us through this life, and Your intent is to make it to the other side of this life with us in safe and careful tow. Forgive us when we forget that You are not concerned about the storms and buffeting in Your life or mine–yesterday, today or tomorrow. We rest in the assurance that if You’re not concerned, there's no reason that we should be either. You have the power to not only manage; You have the power to overcome–perfectly. We really do have precious little to worry about. Life? Bring it on! In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day. May this passing day honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and be a blessing to you and everyone you meet. Find a stranger and say hello. Don't let another day pass without your day blessing someone else.
