Binding?

(11.04.20—Marriage!--Romans 7:2-6)

My friend, may I ask you a question? God declares that there is a blessed tie that binds Christian marriages. Can adding it to a marriage that is hurting spell the difference between a system failure or a system success?

We have a wireless network here at Beech Springs. It ties together all of our computers and provides an internet signal to everyone in the house. Wireless networks are a great idea and when we were first sold on it, we pictured it as a simple way to get rid of all the telephone cables and give everyone in the house the same opportunity to be on the internet at the same time. Nevertheless, within a few days, we discovered that our dream network wasn’t all that it had been cracked up to be. The wireless receiving and sending station sent an unequal signal throughout the house. While one received a good signal, there was always a machine that got cheated and received a poor signal. We were back to internet connectivity inequity all over again. Our solution, which had seemed so brilliant at the start, was beginning to unravel. Finally my son Dan hit on a good solution. Relocate the station and add one piece of equipment that would amplify the signal. It was no more than a tiny little piece of equipment that plugged into a wall socket; but with it, everyone now received a good signal.

Here’s a story: A braid appears to contain only two strands of hair. But it is impossible to create a braid with only two strands. If the two could be put together at all, they would quickly unravel. Herein lies the mystery: What looks like two strands require a third. The third strand, though not immediately evident, keeps the strands tightly woven. In a Christian marriage, God’s presence, like the third strand in a braid, holds holds husband and wife together. (Cathern Paxton.)

That third strand, God’s presence, that adds strength to a marriage and keeps it from unraveling, is the key to binding a marriage in the beginning and keeping it bound throughout. The Bible tells us that a man and a woman are “bound” (Romans 7:2) to one another. That binding is not just a physical one, but also a spiritual one. It may seem like a small thing amid all the myriad of things that make up a marriage, but it is that one, essential piece of equipment, like that little amplifier, without which nothing is balanced or functions well. This is the blessed tie that binds. Adding it to a marriage that is hurting can spell the difference between a system failure or a system success.

We pray. Heavenly Father. Your presence, O Lord, adds strength to marriage and keeps them from unraveling. You tell us that a man and a woman are “bound” (Romans 7:2) to one another and that binding is not just a physical one, but also a spiritual one. Forgive us Lord when we forget about that binding, and look to our own needs for personal satisfaction and comfort. It may seem like a small thing amid all the myriad of things that make up a marriage, but it is that one, essential piece of equipment, without which nothing is balanced or functions well. This is the blessed tie that binds. Adding it to marriages that are hurting can spell the difference between a system failure or a system success. We thank You Lord for this most perfect of blessings. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!

Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day.
