God created us with the unique ability to express our emotions through tears. Although some animals shed tears, these are strictly for purposes of cleansing and not for emotional use. Man alone has the ability to express his emotion in tears. Did you know that, on the average, a woman cries up to five times per week while a man will cry only once? Nonetheless, it’s common to both. Expressing our emotions through tears is a gift God has uniquely reserved for us.
When it comes to prayer, however, does God respect an emotional approach to unburdening our hearts or would He rather deal with a more rational, calculating approach to personal prayer? In fact, is God irritated by our crying out to Him? What do we do to God when we approach Him with our tears? Is He inclined to be corrective or consoling? Does He lose patience with us when we’re crying?
Here’s a thought from Martin Lehman, in his book “Luther and Prayer:” “When we pray we often conjure up a theology of reason, which paints God as a despairing judge in the midst of sin. (In so doing) we distort the picture of God, falsely believing that it’s the right picture. We begin to believe that God is a judging God and not a merciful God. God is a God of love, a God of mercy, a God who saves and give life.” (Luther and Prayer, pg. 83)
Each one of us is precious in God’s sight. Did you know that your prayers, even when accompanied by tears and irrational mumblings, are heard by God not because He chooses to hear them but because He has deemed it to be impossible for Himself not to! A heartfelt prayer, even one spoken in broken words and phrases as we leap from emotion to emotion, becomes an inescapable presence before the throne of God. We ought never to be afraid to break down in God’s presence. In fact, He expects you and I to come totally clean every time that we pray. Sometimes it means tears; sometimes a yearning that can’t even be expressed in words. Thankfully, because God isn’t like us, our unbearable cries will be heard by a God who is perfectly merciful, forgiving, loving, and compassionate. He doesn’t have a choice! He’s designed our “unbearable” crying to be perfected in His hearing. That’s why God hasn’t hung up yet on one, crybaby sinner!

We pray. Heavenly Father, prayer can be frustrating sometimes when we have so much to tell You and can’t quite put it into words. We start with one thing, then switch to another. Some concerns in life are very emotional. At time like that we become emotional and find ourselves unable to put the right words together; the words we long for You to hear. Forgive us Father when we stop praying because we think You will not hear us when we weep, tremble and just don’t know what to say. You’ve designed prayer to be beautiful, even when we can’t put words to our thoughts. Thank You Lord for hearing our thoughts even when we can’t understand them. In Jesus name we pray. Amen!
Therefore my friend, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry for itself; each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matt 6:34) This Passing Day.
